2020 February: American GSM Blend

American GSM Blend Balistreri Vineyards

February 2020

Classic Old World Style Blend

As a natural winery, we prefer to keep each of our vineyards/ varietals separate to showcase their individuality and uniqueness. That’s why we are not typically known for blending… However, some things just go too well together!

A few years ago, we started producing a GSM blend which (as the acronym suggests) is made from Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. It’s one of the world’s most historic blends, and can be found all over the world. Our rendition of this classic blend calls back to some of these Old World examples, while still possessing our own unique touch.

The new vintage (which is the February wine of the month) just might be one of our best renditions yet! It’s decidedly rustic in style but has enough lush fruit to please just about anyone. On the nose there’s an interesting contrast between notes of leather, cinnamon and fresh strawberry. It’s certainly a bold wine but the tannins are gentle and balanced. This is a great spring red and will shine brightly with charcuterie, barbecued chicken or even just roasted vegetables.

See you soon!

PS, Don’t forget that in February, we feature wines from the famed “Lovies Vineyard” in our tasting room. As you likely known, these Lovies Vineyard wines are some of our favorite bottles and easily stand as some of the best Cabernet and Merlot in the whole state. We will have a few bottles from this legendary vineyard open this weekend so stop in to learn more and taste these special wines!

2017 Colorado Syrah

Whitewater Hill Vineyard

Here at Balistreri, it’s no secret that Syrah is one of our favorite grapes (both to make and to drink). We work with several different sites in the Grand Valley that grow Syrah, but surely one of the most unique (and limited) is Whitewater Hill. It’s a rare treat to be able to offer this exclusive Wine Library bottling, as the last vintage it was even produced was way back in 2005!

Planted with a view, this wine is further proof that Colorado is a fantastic region for growing Syrah. This wine hits all the marks with layered aromas of white pepper, game and fresh herbs. On the palate, it’s ripe and lush with black fruit flavors culminating in a spicy, long finish. Do not miss this! If you are interested in a bottle, please stop by the winery or contact us via email or phone.

2020 January: Avant Cabernet Sauvignon

January 2020

Noble Cabernet!
2017 Colorado Cabernet Sauvignon (Avant Vineyard)

Happy new year! We want to start 2020 off right be releasing a stellar Cabernet Sauvignon as the January Wine of the Month. Stop in any time to pick up your wine! See you soon.

2017 Colorado Cabernet Sauvignon (Avant Vineyard)
The grapes for this Cabernet Sauvignon come from Avant Vineyard, one of the many beautiful sites on the Western Slope of Colorado that we work with. Avant is farmed by one of our growers Neil Guard, who harvests the grapes by hand. As always, the grapes are brought here to the winery where we produce the wine without additives or adulteration. This is key to preserving the terroir of the vineyard as well as respecting the noble flavors of the varietal.

Avant is planted on the right bank of the Colorado River (Orchard Mesa) which tempers the hot weather, leading to cool nights and ideal growing conditions especially for Cabernet Sauvignon. Sensing the wine was powerful and bold, we decided to use newer oak knowing that the wine could stand up to the richness of the barrel without loosing any elegance or complexity.

Already, this wine is showing the classic character of Cabernet. On the nose, it slowly reveals aromatics indicative of cassis, raspberry and black tea. Powerful, intense and structurally balanced, this wine is for the purists who love masculine, bold Cabernet. It’s drinking fantastically right now but will surely develop further in the bottle. If time permits, decant this wine for up to an hour before serving. This extra air will bring a brightness and clarity to the fruit despite the wine being young.

Again, we hope to see you soon!

Happy New Year!
